Confederation Line LRT Extension

The Confederation Line LRT Extension is an extension of a state of the art 12.5-kilometer LRT system that opened in 2019.  The existing line consists of 13 stations, a 2.5-kilometer tunnel through the downtown core, a Maintenance and Storage Facility and the purchase of 34 Alstom Citadis Light Rail Vehicles.

The new portion (Stage 2) of this DBF project consists of a western and eastern extension to the original line:

  • The western extension to the Confederation Line (“Confederation Line West Extension”) which will extend LRT service from the western terminus of the Confederation Line adds an additional 15 km of service and eleven new stations.  There are 5 elevated stations.  The project also includes a series of new structures, including road and rail overpasses, grade separations, drainage systems, utility relocations and multiple pedestrian bridges.
  • Eastern extension to the Confederation Line (“Confederation Line East Extension”) which will extend LRT service from the eastern terminus of the Confederation Line adds 12.5 km of service and five new stations.

The project also includes a series of new structures, including road and rail overpasses, widening of the OR 174 highways, grade separations, utility relocations and multiple pedestrian bridges.

A new Light Maintenance and Storage Facility (“LMSF”) will be constructed at the extreme western end of the line.

The Confederation Line East Extension and Confederation Line West Extension uses the same LRT vehicle and system technology as the Confederation Line to provide a seamless service across the City.

East Substantial Completion Certificate November 2024, West Substantial Completion Certificate May 2025 and two separate Final Completion Certificates.  Early turnover of Municipal Infrastructure and Ministry of Transportation Infrastructure throughout the project.  Two dispute determinations provided.
